My First Ever Rant Post

February 17, 2015 by Paul 4 Comments

In my almost 9 years as a blogger, I don’t think I have ever once written a rant post.

Until now.

I don’t usually like ranting, as I prefer to focus on solutions instead of pointing out and ranting about things that piss me off…

However, I want to create a more authentic and more transparent connecting with you, my audience, just as if you were to spend a week at my house and we were hanging out.

My friend Chris, he actually lost his crappy job in Alberta a few years ago, phoned me and I told him to get in his car and drive down to my place in British Columbia and I would let him stay at my place and teach him how to be an entrepreneur.

He showed up, slept on my couch and ended up living here for a few months until he got back up on his feet, moved out on his own and now embraces the entrepreneurial lifestyle, and he loves it.

So he actually DID get to spend 1-on-1 time with me, not just for a week, but for a few months and he got to know the authentic me, and I think he learned a lot about what it really takes to be an entrepreneur who works from home.

He saw how I deal with things, how I process things, how I accomplish things, and how I sometimes do rant about certain things that just drive me nuts.

I’ve never really felt inspired to rant about anything on my Blog, until today…

… and when I say “today” I really mean “tonight” because right now it’s 1:24 am.

Why am I still up at 1:24 am?

Rant #1 – Decision Making

Because I am an entrepreneur and at the beginning of this year I set a goal to write a blog post every day, and I’m not allowed to go to sleep until I write my post.

I am allowed to make the decision to STOP blogging daily if I want to, but until that decision is made, I have to blog every day.

This is how Entrepreneurship works.

You make decisions.  And then you FOLLOW THROUGH on those decisions.

You don’t WUSS OUT because you’re tired and it would be much easier to go to sleep.

I have a *really* nice and comfy king sized bed with a pillow top and memory foam on top of that.  When I lie down in my bed, it feels like I’m floating on a cloud of softness, while at the same time having every part of my body perfectly supported with the exact perfect amount of firmness all at the same time.

When I lie down in my bed, I swear I sometimes hear Angels sing – THAT’S how comfortable that sucker is!

So why the hell am I sitting here in my office, writing this Blog post, instead of sleeping in my comfy bed?

Because I made the DECISION to do this, and real entrepreneurs follow through on their decisions.

Broke people do the opposite.

First of all, it takes them 10 years to even MAKE a decision in the first place… they’re SO indecisive it’s not even funny.  They can’t even decide what they’re going to drink with their meal at a restaurant.  They have to tell the waitress to come back because they need to make sure they make the right decision.  Jeezus, make a fricken decision already!

And then, after they’ve taken 10 years to make a decision about anything, they change their mind 100 times, flip flopping back and forth.

Successful people make decisions QUICKLY and then very seldom do they change their minds.  Broke people make decisions very slowly, and then change their mind very often.

I’m convinced this is because successful people are in tune with their intuition and they TRUST it as it never steers them wrong.

Broke people are always trying to make “logical” or “rational” decisions, by trying to weigh the facts.

Logical and rational decisions are almost impossible to make because there is too much data involved in making such a decision and at any given time, when you think you have analyzed all the proper data required to make a proper “logical/rational” decision, chances are that you’re still missing 90% of the truth.

Intuition is different.  You tune into your Higher Self – your gut feeling – your “sixth-sense” if you want to call it that, and you FEEL your way to the right decision.

When I say “FEEL” I’m not referring to emotion by the way.  Emotions can be manipulated, but your intuition / gut feeling will always guide you in the right direction.

This leads me to the second thing that drives me nuts…

Rant #2 – People With “Situational” Spiritual Beliefs

I love people who have strong spiritual beliefs.

I also love people who have strong atheistic beliefs who are more “scientifically” minded, I guess we could say.

I find it easy to communicate with both of these types of people because to me a highly evolved understanding of spirituality and a highly evolved understanding of science are pretty much the same thing.

You just have to switch a few vocabulary words around and I can have a meaningful conversation with both types of people.

The people that I find annoying are those who have what I call “Situational” spiritual beliefs.

Meaning, in certain situations such as at Church on a Sunday, when they are surrounded by their social circles, they pretend to be “spiritual” by participating in the Religious ceremonies and traditions and reading from the Bible and listening to the preacher preach… and it’s all good…

… but then Monday comes around and they all of a sudden become “Atheists” at work, because all of a sudden they’ve decided to go all “scientific” in front of their friends or co-workers.

The same thing goes for a lot of people in the New Age circles.

You know the ones who believe in one form of energy healing, for example Reiki, and they accept the spiritual nature of it without any issues, but then when they’re presented with another form of healing such as … oh I don’t know… acupuncture for example, they say things like “Oh I don’t know about acupuncture… isn’t it just a placebo?”

So wait, you believe in Reiki energy having the ability to flow through the hands of a practitioner and heal someone, but you don’t believe that acupuncture could work?  Huh?

Or for that matter, people who believe in certain types of Religious faith healers, but who don’t believe that something like Reiki would be possible.

Heck, Jesus healed with his hands, so to me it makes no sense for someone to believe that Jesus existed and that he healed people with his hands, but then to not believe in something like Reiki.

To me, it doesn’t intellectually compute!

Pick a side…you either believe in things like intuition, spirituality, faith, Universal energy, Law of Attraction, God etc. – OR – you don’t believe in anything that can’t be measured scientifically.

Flip flopping back and forth, just depending on who you’re around and who you’re trying to impress in the social circle you’re in doesn’t make sense.

Rant #3 – Responsibility

Although I am not perfect at this, I strive to take 100% responsibility for co-creating everything in my life.

Not 90%, not 99%, but 100% of EVERYTHING.

When things are going well, I take 100% responsibility for that.

When things are not going well, I take 100% responsibility for that as well.

One of my pet peeves is when people are quick to take ownership of all the GOOD things they manifest in their lives, but as soon as something happens that they didn’t want to happen, they go looking for someone OUT THERE to blame.

Blaming things “out there” without simultaneously taking responsibility for manifesting the situations “out there” robs you of your true power.

We are all co-creators in this reality, and we are all responsible for what we bring into it.

What this also means is that the very things that I’m ranting about in this post, I take 100% responsibility for co-creating them in my life as well.

Maybe this post is my way of releasing some of this energy surrounding these issues. 🙂

Rant #4 – Trolls and Haters

I was doing some research for my wife’s business today and I ended up on a Reiki website.

I read parts of the article that I landed on, and then I scrolled down to the comments section.

Most of the comments were positive, but there were a few comments on there from people who were bashing Reiki…

I have no problem if someone doesn’t believe in Reiki… but what I don’t get is WHY would someone go out of their way to go and FIND a Reiki website, and then to go through the hassle of reading an article about Reiki, just to post stupid, mean, nasty comments about Reiki as a practice.

I don’t get it. Don’t these people have better things to do with their lives?

I mean, I don’t particularly enjoy shopping at Walmart.  Something about the energy of the store just doesn’t resonate with me, so I hardly ever shop at Walmart.

I don’t like it.

BUT, I don’t get in my car, and drive to Walmart, and then go inside and walk around screaming “Walmart Sucks!  Walmart Sucks!”

What the hell would be the point of that?

I also don’t like macaroni and cheese, but if I see it on the menu at a restaurant, I don’t jump out of my seat and start yelling “Macaroni and Cheese sucks!” to all the customers!

Only idiots would do that…

… but for some reason, when it comes to website comments, people seem to have this need to run around visiting websites of things they don’t like, just to leave nasty comments about those things.

LOL…why waste your time?  I don’t understand this behaviour.

Actually, I just remembered an article I read a while back.  Apparently a recent study concluded that Internet Trolls are actually narcissists, psychopaths and sadists.

Well, okay, I guess that explains it.

Moving on…

Rant #5 – America’s Communist Slant

I was born in Poland, which was a communist country when I lived there.

My family and I immigrated to Canada when I was a little kid, because we wanted freedom and to no longer be under communist government rule.

Although I didn’t experience communism to the level that my parents did since I was just a kid, I do know that it SUCKS…

It literally SUCKS the ambition out of people.

In the 1980’s and 90’s any time you would turn on the TV, most of American programming was focused on bashing the Russians and their communist ways.

People looked at countries like Russia and China, under communist rule, and they were amazed that the people within these countries didn’t understand that communism doesn’t work.

Fast forward to 2015, and America seems to have adopted so many communist views that it’s mind-boggling.

The American Dream has been replaced with an entitlement mentality.

As an entrepreneur I don’t understand this.

Rant #6 – Uggs

They’re ugly.

The people who wear them aren’t ugly people, but they’re just wearing ugly boots.

Sorry…it’s true.

I don’t get why so many girls wear these.

I’ve never met a guy who thought that they looked good on any girl wearing them.

I don’t get it…why would women wear these?

Unless… maybe girls know that Uggs are super ugly, BUT they put them on and they’re just as comfortable as my king sized pillow-top bed with memory foam… and the epic comfort outweighs their epic ugg-liness?

Maybe that’s why girls wear them… because its like walking on a pillow-top bed.

What do you think?

Speaking of bed, it’s time for me to hit mine.

Mad World Reimagined – Music Track by Paul Piotrowski

February 16, 2015 by Paul 3 Comments

A few days ago I wrote a blog post sharing one of my hobbies which is hydroponic vegetable gardening.

Today I wanted to write a quick post where I share another one of my hobbies – which is making music.

Making music is something I have always wanted to do even when I was a little kid, but I actually didn’t really get into it more seriously until about a seven months ago.

I’ll write a more in-depth post about how I produce music in the future, but today I just wanted to share one of my first music tracks that I ever created.

The track is a song called “Mad World Reimagined” and the original version of this song was called “Mad World” produced by Tears for Fears.

The first time I heard their version of this song, I immediately fell in love with it, so I wanted to make my own version of it with my own electronic style added in.

Here it is…

Mad World Reimagined by Paul Piotrowski

or if you prefer YouTube…

Are You a Musician Looking to Build a Following?

Are you a music producer or DJ or musician looking to build an audience for your music?

Do you want to learn how to properly brand yourself online and how to connect with your fans authentically?

If so, I strongly recommend that you take a look at the Kalatu Brand Station system and training as a way to build a successful blog / website where you can showcase your work, connect with your fans, build a following and eventually promote your music or shows.

What do you think of my song?

I think it was the fourth song I have ever produced in my life.  I made it using Maschine Studio.

The Number One Reason You Can Make Your Dreams Come True

February 15, 2015 by Paul Leave a Comment

Sometimes I have these weird moments where a strange thought pops into my mind and I’m like “Woa… that’s crazy…”

This evening I was out for dinner with my wife, eating at this small Fish’n’Chips place near our house that recently opened up, and suddenly this thought popped into my mind…

It was a realization that we were sitting there, and eating at a restaurant that started out as someone’s dream!

I am pretty sure that the lady that served us is the owner or the wife of the owner, so that Fish’n’Chips place was/is their dream…

…and my wife and I were sitting INSIDE their dream, eating the fish and chips that they dreamed up the recipe for and it was delicious.

Then I started thinking that we are SURROUNDED by and living and enjoying not just ours but other people’s dreams as well.

The car we drive in, was someone’s dream!  Maybe it was a group of people, but before the car was ever created it had to first be dreamed up.

The computer or mobile device or tablet that you’re on right now, reading this post, was at one point someone’s dream.

When you go to eat at any restaurant, that restaurant started off as a dream and now it is reality.

And when you eat at a restaurant, there’s a chef there that cooks your food, and becoming a chef was their dream at some point as well.

And that chef probably went to culinary school, and they were taught by a culinary school teacher, and that teacher also had a dream… his dream was to teach chefs.

And the school that the teacher taught at, and the chef studied at, well that school was someone’s dream as well!

And the construction crew that built the school is owned by someone who once had a dream to run his own construction company.

Everything around us, was once a dream.

And then SOMEONE made it a reality.

And you know what?

I bet that this someone who made that thing a reality had to face certain obstacles before their dream was realized.

They probably faced doubt, criticism, challenges, struggles and setbacks along the way towards achieving their dream.

But you know what?  In the end, they MUST have prevailed and made their dreams come true, otherwise whatever that thing is wouldn’t exist.

How inspiring is that?!

Any time we open our eyes and look around, all around us we can see REALIZED dreams from people who dared to dream, and then made those dreams come true.

So ask yourself this question…

If almost EVERYTHING around us was once someone’s DREAM and then that person or group of people found a way to REALIZE those dreams – making them a reality – then why not you?

If THEY can do it, then you can do it too!

You can do it.

You can make your dreams come true.

MLM Industry Stats You Probably Didn’t Know

February 14, 2015 by Paul 2 Comments

Most people look at the MLM / Network Marketing / Direct Selling industry as a sort of “hobby” thing that some people do after hours or on weekends as a way to “get rich quick” by getting lucky and finding out about some new company before anyone else does.

Some people even look at the whole MLM industry as a joke.

The fact is though that the direct selling industry is no joke.

It’s one of the most successful industries in the world, with a proven track record and strong growth especially in the last four years when a lot of other industries have been hit with an economic downturn.

The Direct Selling Association reports the following statistics for the 2013 Estimated Total Direct Retail Sales in the United States alone in the industry:

  • 2009 Total Sales = $28,330,000,000
  • 2010 Total Sales = $28,560,000,000
  • 2011 Total Sales = $29,870,000,000
  • 2012 Total Sales = $31,630,000,000
  • 2013 Total Sales = $32,670,000,000

What this basically shows it that the industry has grown by $4.34 BILLION dollars in just 4 years.  That’s an average of more than 1 BILLION dollars in growth per year!

Just to offer a comparison in terms of numbers, if we look at the entire MOVIE industry for example, the total box office sales in 2013 in US and Canada together were only $10.9 Billion.

That means that the “MLM thing” that most uninformed people make fun of is three times bigger than the movie industry!

Now, these are just US numbers.  What about GLOBAL numbers?

Well, here’s some GLOBAL stats that might surprise you.

Total Global Sales for 2012:

  • Music Industry – $16.5 Billion
  • Video Gaming Industry – $67 Billion
  • Movie Industry – $80 Billion
  • Network Marketing – $167 Billion!!!

This means that the Network Marketing industry worldwide in 2012 was larger then the entire Music and Video Gaming and Movie Industries COMBINED.

Surprised?

Most people are.

Why is that though?

I think the main reason for this is because the network marketing industry is the ONLY industry out of those four listed above which offers ordinary, regular people with no previous experience the opportunity to start their own business.

The fact is that the MLM / Network Marketing industry always has a large percentage of it’s members as brand NEW distributors who just got started recently and who haven’t yet been properly trained on how to be professional network marketers.

These brand new distributors join an MLM and 24 hours later they’re out there trying to SELL the products that their company offers and to sponsor others into their business as well.

There’s nothing wrong with that, except for the fact that MOST of these people do not come from a professional marketing or sales background and so their ability to properly prospect, build rapport and to tactfully SELL their prospects on the products that the company offers is virtually non-existent.

Basically, the vast majority of MLM distributors STINK AT SALES!

They DON’T know how to properly sell to people in a way that makes the people feel comfortable and at ease, and so the process of being approached by a network marketer often turns out being awkward and maybe even annoying.

Some network marketers really don’t know what they’re doing when they first get started, and so they resort to crazy spammy tactics that give the industry a bad rep.

It is the behavior of THESE types of individuals, who don’t take the time to get properly trained and who don’t invest in themselves and their skill-set which gives the whole industry this stigma of being somewhat “unprofessional”.

However, things ARE quickly changing.

People are now really starting to realize that just signing up for an MLM and then trying to SPAM your warm market list and ATTACK them with an onslaught of phone calls, “party” invites, text messages, emails and facebook chat spamming is NOT the way to build your business.

There IS a much better way and people are starting to realize that.

New strategies and systems have been built, such as the Kalatu Brand Station technology and the Top Producer Formula and Team Builder Formula training products from Empower Network, which arm MLM distributors with the proper tools and training they need to be able to generate leads and sales in their MLM, as well as building a strong team that duplicates.

No longer are MLM distributors limited to the often outdated and very primitive training that is provided by their MLM company itself.

Network Marketers can now invest in a professional education and become Network Marketing Professionals who give the industry a GOOD name, instead of a bad one.

It may take a few years for the stigma of some of the older, unprofessional methods that were used in the past to disappear, but I believe that one the industry becomes known for it’s professional reps, the sales numbers I reported earlier are going to SKYROCKET even higher!

It’s no wonder that Warren Buffet and Donald Trump are such big fans of his industry.

They KNOW where it’s going. 🙂

What about you?  Where do you think about the MLM industry.  Do you think that it’s evolving and becoming more professional?

Growing a Hydroponic Vegetable Garden – Attempt #1

February 13, 2015 by Paul 2 Comments

For some really weird reason I still don’t understand, one year ago I woke up one morning with the idea in my mind that I *must* research and learn how to grow a vegetable garden hydroponically.

It was one of those intuitive hits that I have learned to listen to in my life.

A gut feeling that I just couldn’t shake.

To be honest the thought crossed my mind that maybe my intuition was preparing me for something that might happen in the near future, like some crazy apocalyptic event where all of a sudden there’s a major disruption in the food supply and learning how to grow my own vegetables could save my life or something.

I don’t think that’s going to happen, but I did have that thought cross my mind and when my intuition tells me to pay attention to it I listen!

So I started researching everything I could about hydroponic gardening and started setting up a small hydroponic system to see if I could grow some vegetables.

The whole process of learning about this way of growing food completely fascinated me and I found it a LOT of fun.

Sprouting Seeds for My Hydroponic Garden

I started off by just going out and buying some seeds for a few different types of vegetables and trying to sprout them.

I did a bunch of research on YouTube and the Internet about how to sprout seeds and I discovered that you can do it pretty easily using the paper towel method where you just put seeds on a wet paper towel, and throw the towel in a large ziploc bag and place it somewhere warm (don’t melt the bag though).

The seeds started to sprout pretty quickly, which was kind of exciting as I’ve never grown any vegetables before in my life.

Next, I went to the hydroponic supply store and picked up some Grodan Rockwool cubes that the guy there recommended for starting off your seedlings.

As I was a total beginner, I really didn’t know WHAT stuff to grow so I just started planing all kinds of seeds for various types of vegetables.

I had green beans, cucumbers, spinach, several types of tomatoes, chives, red peppers, green onions, lettuce, zucchini, radishes, beets and cauliflower.

I also found this other stuff called “Sure to Grow” that’s white and kind of soft and spongy that you can use to sprout seeds so I threw a bunch of seeds in to try to grow them in that stuff as well.

All in all I had a LOT of different types of seeds sprouting and growing.

Again, as a total noob, I had no idea what to expect and how many seeds would actually grow so I just went a bit crazy and started a whole bunch of seeds to see what would actually start growing.

Setting Up My Hydroponic Garden

Once my seeds started sprouting and then grew into seedlings I started moving them into my actual grow system that I setup.

There are several different types of hydroponics systems you can setup, and I decided to go with a flood and drain system which basically just means that the system is on a timer that floods the roots of the plants with nutrient rich water for a certain period of time like a few minutes and then drains the water for a certain period of time like a few hours, and then repeats.

This way the roots of the plant get water, and nutrients and also the oxygen they need to thrive.

Here’s a short time-lapse clip I shot one day showing my plants over a 12 hour period of time.

The reason everything is pink looking is because I am using an LED grow light that’s got a pink hue to it.

Later in the video you see a second grow light I had setup come on and then you can see the vegetables in a more natural light / color.

Once I got everything setup to this point, everything was pretty much growing on autopilot.

I had a system setup where the lights would come on and turn off on a timer automatically.

Another system was in place which would periodically flood and drain the nutrient water into the different growth buckets to feed the roots of the plants.

I had a heating system in place which would keep the temperature at a certain level and a fan which would cool down the temperature if needed.

All in all, it was a fairly automated system that took very little maintenance and it was kind of fun to watch the plants grow every week.

Then I started running into some challenges. 🙂

Hydroponic Garden Challenge #1 – “Growing Pains”

One of the first challenges that I ran into with my setup was that I completely underestimated how much ROOM it would take to grow all of those seeds that I started.

When they were just seedlings, I could fit all the different plants into my growing buckets, but as they started to grow they all started crowding each other.

When I planted the seeds I didn’t know what percentage of them would actually grow and survive, so that is why I planted so many.

But then once I had them growing, I felt bad about throwing some of them away when I realized I didn’t have enough room to grow them.

At first I just moved things around to try to make room for the different plants, but as they kept getting bigger and bigger I just couldn’t keep up and had to start cutting back on the number of plants I was growing at the same time.

The three plants that just completely took off and started growing super fast were my tomatoes, my cucumbers and my green beans.  The sweet peppers also started growing, but not as tall as the others.

It seemed that I would leave them for a day or two and come back with them twice the size as I left them.

It was pretty exciting, but it also got increasingly crowded!

Hydroponic Garden Challenge #2 – Equipment Malfunctions

The next challenge I started running into was a few equipment malfunctions that were really annoying.

Firstly, the pH meter setup I had in place was setup in such a way that it was constantly monitoring the pH levels of my nutrient water.

I would check the pH levels on a regular basis and try to maintain them at an ideal range for the plants that I was growing.

Using a product called pH Up and pH Down I could adjust the pH levels of the water as needed.

However, at some point my pH started going out of wack and I couldn’t figure out what was going on.

My readings started showing the pH Levels being very alkaline for some reason.

I tried making adjustments, but something just seemed really off.

It wasn’t until a bit later that I realized that the one thing I didn’t consider checking was the actual TESTER itself!  Meaning I didn’t consider that the digital pH meter itself could be giving me false readings.

Sure enough when I compared it with another meter I purchased, it was completely off.

This was weird because when I bought it, I calibrated it and I tested it multiple times to make sure it was spot on and it was.

But I guess after a certain period of time it needed to be re-calibrated.

I tried doing the standard calibration process as shown in the instructions, but I couldn’t get it work.

After a bit of digging around, I realized that the probe itself was malfunctioning and it wasn’t reading things properly.

I sent it back to the manufacturer, and they claimed that they were able to calibrate it properly and that nothing was wrong with it.

When I tried using the probe again, it was now working so I know they must have done SOMETHING to it to make it work, but I don’t know what they did.

Unfortunately, after a few weeks that same problem came back again so I’m pretty sure there is something wrong with that probe.

I was going to order a replacement one, but I never got around to it as I had another challenge I ran into.

Hydroponic Garden Challenge #3 – Difficult Tomatoes and Cucumbers

The two plants that started growing on my like CRAZY were my tomato plants and my cucumber plants.

They started growing like crazy and started crowding out the other plants.

My green beans didn’t really do too well, so I got rid of them and just made room for tomatoes and cucumbers.

My sweet peppers were also growing in the corner but much smaller than my tomatoes and cucumbers.

After a while, my tomato plants and my cucumber plants were over 6 feet tall and just growing like crazy, but there was one problem…. NO FLOWERS!

All they were growing were leaves!  No flowers, just leaves and more leaves.

My cucumbers started REALLY sprawling and taking things over.  I had to cut them back several times.

By this time it had been about 3-4 months since I started my hydroponic garden “experiment”, and I was excited about how fast the plants were growing but frustrated that I wasn’t getting any flowers or fruit!

Yes, big flowers are cool, but where were my vegetables!

I started doing some more research on tomato plants, how they grow, the ideal nutrient mixture for them, lightning conditions and pruning practices etc.

I tried making some changes to various things to try to figure out why my plants weren’t flowering, and I did start to get a little discouraged.

Then one day as I was showing my setup to my brother, I lifted up one of my sweet pepper plant leaves and I saw something amazing – MY FIRST PEPPER!

Again, the pink hue in the picture is due to the LED grow light I was using.

I was so excited because FINALLY my hydroponic garden produced SOMETHING!!!

I actually cut the pepper down and tasted it, and it actually tasted delicious.

More than that, it smelled amazing!

That little “win” for me got me excited even more and I started doing more research to try to figure out why my tomatoes and cucumbers weren’t growing.

But then I ran into yet another challenge…

Hydroponic Garden Challenge #4 – Sudden Lack of Time

Shortly after discovering my first sweet pepper had grown, I ran into a small challenge in that my business got really busy and I had to focus on it, which meant that I had less time to focus on my garden.

The system was pretty self-running though, so it wasn’t that bad.  I had set everything up in a way where the whole system takes care of itself and all I had to do was just monitor the water levels, nutrient levels and also pH once in a while – like once a week – to make sure everything was running well.

Then I ran into my final major challenge…

Hydroponic Garden Challenge #5 – Major Malfunction!

Then disaster struck.

I thought that I had setup a fairly robust system with everything running automatically by itself with just a little bit of maintenance required.

But what I didn’t count on was a seemingly small LIGHTING issue that turned into a disaster.

See, I was using this fancy electronic lighting timer that allowed me to create a schedule for the light system I had and gave me down to the minute control over when the lights come on and when they come off.

At the hydroponic store I saw that most of the stuff the sold was just old-school analog timer switches for the lights, whereas mine was a fancy digital one that I could even monitor and control from the Internet!

Unfortunately, for some weird reason the unit malfunctioned and it went into some kind of error mode and it turned off all the lights in my grow room.

I had no idea that this happened, so I was under the impression that everything was fine and that my plants were growing nicely!

But that was not the case, LOL!

Then, also because of my suddenly busy and hectic schedule with my business I didn’t actually check in on my plants for almost a week.

When I did, I was shocked to see that the lights were completely off!!!

When I re-set the digital lighting controller / timer, it came back on and the lights were back on, but all my plants were already dead!

🙁

In that moment I learned why the hydroponics store sold the old school ANALOG timers – because they are WAY more reliable than the digital one I was using – LOL.

I’m a tech-geek though so I always want to play with cool toys, and that digital timer with Internet hookup was just so much fun to play with.

I just never considered that it could JAM like that and just turn off the lights for a week, hehehe.

Looking back, I think there might have been a power failure at my house during that week for a few seconds where the power just kind of fluctuated on and off, and I think that maybe there was a small surge or power spike that forced the unit into some kind of protection mode.

In either case, the lighting system I setup failed and so all my plants died.

I decided to “retire” the system for the winter, and decide what I want to do in the new year.

Restarting My Hydroponic Garden

In the beginning of this year I decided to restart my hydroponic garden by trying to grow some tomatoes with the Aerogarden I have.

With this thing, it’s small enough that I was able to put it in my office where I can keep an eye on it, and I also wanted to see if the tomato plants/seeds that come with Aerogarden would be able to actually produce flowers and fruit.

So I got that setup about 1 month ago, and here is the progress so far:

Aerogarden Cherry Tomatoes

As you can see the plants are growing pretty quickly.

The are actually about double the size that you see in the picture above, and guess what I saw today?

I saw that one of the plants actually started FLOWERING!

Two little yellow flowers started to grow.  I’m pretty excited.

This Aerogarden setup is my little experiment to see if I can successfully grow tomatoes indoors using a hydroponic system and an LED light.

If this works I’ll most likely start to get my much bigger system back up and running.

This time around I’ll do a few things differently.

Mainly:

  1. Analog Light Controller – For my lighting system, this time around I will use an analog / mechanical switch that I hope will be way more reliable than a digital one.
  2. Less Plant Variety – I’m definitely going to try growing much LESS variety this time around.  I might not even grow tomatoes or cucumbers this time around.  I might stick to sweet peppers, since those seemed pretty easy to grow for me, and maybe some herbs as those grew pretty quickly as well.
  3. More Research – I definitely need to do more research on nutrient balances and maybe more on lighting as well.

I’m not quite sure yet when I’ll get my main hydroponic system up and running again, but it might be pretty soon as the weather has been getting better and it almost feels like SPRING here in Vancouver, BC, Canada even though it’s just February! 🙂

Hopefully this time around I won’t have a disaster like the one I had last year, but the cool thing is that no matter happens, at least I’m learning about something new and interesting that’s also fun for me to play with.

I’ve never really had any major interest in gardening or growing vegetables or anything like this in the past, but for some reason I just developed a little passion for this new hobby of mine.

The cool thing is that because I work from home, I can do these things during my days when most people are stuck at their jobs.

What kind of hobbies would YOU like to get into if you could retire from your job and work from home instead?
